Welcome Letter

Welcome Letter

Dear students, colleagues and friends,

I am delighted to welcome you to the Latin American Studies Program at the University of Toronto. Our program brings together a vibrant and diverse group of scholars, students and community members sharing common interests in a variety of Latin American topics. Since my arrival at the University of Toronto 6 years ago in 2009, I have benefitted greatly from the interdisciplinary dialogue and generous, scholarly exchange that is central to the LAS community. It is a unique privilege to become the new director of this program.

LAS@UofT has a strong trajectory of engagement in the latest scholarship in the Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences as well as with local and international artistic and social activist communities. Under the recent expert leadership of professors Ken Mills, Rosa Sarabia, Eva-Lynn Jagoe, Ana María Bejarano, and most recently, Valentina Napolitano, the program has become a hub for creative collaboration across the disciplines, between and beyond academic institutions. I look forward to continuing this work, to strengthening our collective scholarship and pedagogy, and to enhancing our students’ university experience.

Thanks to the creative research initiatives and expertise of our students and faculty, in combination with the growing and dynamic presence of Latin American communities in the greater Toronto area, LAS is ideally positioned to forge new partnerships and to offer innovative perspectives on the many facets of Latin America in Canada and the world.

I invite you visit us at the Jackman Humanities Building, 5th floor, and to explore our web site, featuring course offerings, upcoming events, faculty research and teaching profiles, and much more. I look forward to working with you.

With best wishes,

Susan Antebi
Director, Latin American Studies
