Social Justice and Solidarity: The Limits and Potential of the University

by Catriona Spaven-Donn

Peru

This is a special opportunity for all undergraduate students at the University of Toronto, regardless of their area of interest.

Overview
This workshop will focus on Latin American social movements and the implications of university and NGO involvement in transnational solidarity struggles of the Global South. The workshop will interrogate participatory action research paradigms and consider alternatives to traditional ethnographic approaches.

About the Presenter
Catriona Spaven-Donn is a Visiting Scholar with the Latin American Studies Program. She completed her MPhil in Latin American Studies at the University of Cambridge in 2017, where she conducted research on community-based tourism on Amantani Island in Peru. Having written and researched theories of “NGOization”, and informed by her involvement leading a seminar in the new Latin American Studies course, Critical Perspectives on Volunteerism and Development in Winter 2018, Catriona is looking forward to sharing different perspectives on solidarity and development.
