Join us for the presentation of a collaborative series that will explore the links between Islam and Latin America!

From the Muslim Ban to Trump's Wall between the US and Mexico, Muslims, Latin Americans, and US and Canadian Latinxs together are now the subject of national security, trade, and immigration debates.

While politicians may address Latin America, Islam / Muslims, terrorism and drugs separately and through different governmental measures, this conversation recognizes that these operate as implicitly racialized tropes in a Western Hemisphere conversation about identity, belonging, and citizenship.

In this series of events, we will discuss our historical ties, as well as the similar challenges that our regional and religious communities face as targets of North American domestic and foreign policy.

Join us! Today, we will commemorate two events that changed irreversibly these debates: the coup d'etat against Chilean President Salvador Allende on September 11, 1973 and the terrorist attacks against the US on September 11, 2001.

This event is co-organized by the Institute for Islamic Studies at the University of Toronto. We are grateful for the support of the Office of the Vice-President International in the organization of this series.
