Andrea SimonitsMy name is Andrea Simonits and I am a third year student specializing in Political Science and minoring in Latin American Studies. As a student of LAS, I have always been interested in the truly unique history and evolving politics  of the region. Since LAS is such a broad and interdisciplinary area of study, I narrowed my focus on what interests me most - contemporary Latin American politics. More specifically, my research lies within the realm of immigration  policy (Between the United States and Latin American countries) and counter-insurgency efforts (FARC). I have been interning at the Colombian Consulate, downtown, for the past two years in  event planning. Some of the projects that I have worked on include the MCing of the Pan  American Games 2015 organizing committee, helping to organize last year’s “Semana de la Salud” and reviewing the Consul General’s speeches and public addresses. I am currently working on improving my Spanish and hope to begin an undergraduate thesis related to my aforementioned interests in contemporary Latin American politics.
